A razor-thin margin separated the Estevan Peewee AA Bruins and their Weyburn Opponents in their playoff series. It took two overtimes in the elimination game in Weyburn on Saturday, February 23, but the Red Wings ultimately took the victory.

"We lost on a power play goal on kind of a scramble in front of the net," said head coach Aren Miller of the winning goal. "We almost had it killed off but they ended up jumping on a loose puck and throwing it through a maze, and it found the back of the net."

Despite the playoff exit, Miller was satisfied with his team's accomplishments in his first season behind the bench.

"I think this year was a huge success," he said. "We had pretty much all of our kids playing together for the first time. It's the first time a lot of these kids from out of town have gotten to come in and play at the AA level and it's a huge adjustment. I think we learned how to lose early on and what it takes to win in this league. We had a pretty good winning streak mid-season."

All year long Miller had marvelled at the closeness of the competition in the leage. No team really seemed to have a clear advantage over another, and that slim margin of error was reflected in their playoff series.

"We ultimately fell 4-3 and 3-2 in double overtime," he said, "and it just came down to a break here and there or a referee's call and we didn't get the breaks in the playoffs. Sometimes that's the way it works and our kids will be better for it, that's for sure."

"I told our kids it's not very often you beat the first place team twice and the second place team twice," he added. "We beat and lost to every team in the league. Part of that is the consistency of young kids, especially with our team, most of those kids it's their first time playing AA in a true provincial league. I think the kids gained a lot of valuable experience and I and the other coaches had a lot of fun."
