SAN ANTONIO, Tex. — The sun finally started to come out near the end of the day, but it was already a sunny day for the Saskatchewan Selects in San Antonio, Tex.

The Selects’ four teams posted a combined record of 5-2 over the course of the opening day of the 2018 Alamo City Pigskin International Classic on Saturday.

They will have two teams — the 10-and-under and 16-and-under — playing for championships on Sunday.

The 16U Selects put together a dominating performance in their only game of the tournament, beating the Monterrey Bay All-Stars, 17-0, at Benson Stadium on the University of Incarnate Word campus.

After an early field goal from Emmett Steadman out of Regina, he added to the team’s lead late in the first half with an amazing 30-yard catch-and-run touchdown to make it 11-0 at halftime.

Weyburn’s Chase Fillmore broke into the open field with 2:33 to go in the third quarter and he scampered his way into the end zone for a 50-yard touchdown run that made it 17-0 for the Selects.

The win puts the Selects into the championship game at 6 p.m. on Sunday. They will play an exhibition game at 2 p.m. against West Virginia.

The young 10U Selects put together a perfect day, posting a 2-0 record.

They opened the tournament with a 13-0 win over the San Antonio Arsenal, which was highlighted by a pair of touchdowns from Weyburn running back Alexander Junk.

Linebacker Jacob Goldstone out of Milestone also had a strong performance in the opening game with a forced fumble and a big tackle for loss.

In their second game, the Selects won 18-12 over the Lubbock Spartans, which secured them a spot in the championship game on Sunday.

The 12U Selects had everything working offensively in their first game of the day on Saturday, scoring a 32-7 win over the San Antonio True Blue.

Lloydminster’s Xander Pierce opened the scoring for the Selects with a four-yard touchdown run.

After San Antonio responded with a kickoff return, the Selects gave it right back as Yorkton’s Jake Farrell connected deep with Regina’s Kenton Appel for a big touchdown to make it 12-7 going into the half.

Appel came close to scoring his second touchdown of the game, hauling in a 40-yard grab before being tackled at the one-yard line. Quarterback Charlie Broda punched it in after that for a six-yard touchdown.

Farrell found Swift Current’s Jarron Reid deep for a 37-yard score late in the third quarter.

Broda ran for another five-yard touchdown with 5:50 to play and then Estevan’s Hayden Borhart hauled in an interception over the middle to seal the win late.

The Selects ran into a tough test in their second game, falling 25-7 to the North Oak Cliff Eagles to finish the day at 1-1.

They will be back on the field at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday for the bronze medal game.

The 14U Selects had a tough test on the opening day as they played back-to-back games.

They lost a hard fought defensive battle 7-6 to the South Texas Extreme in their opening game. Regina’s Conner Sombach recovered a muffed punt in the end zone for the Selects’ only score of the game.

After a team didn’t show up for the game immediately after, the Selects jumped at the chance to head back on the field for an exhibition game against the Hyfa East Texas Elite.

The offence found its groove for the Selects in the second game with White City’s Brennan Horvath opening the scoring with a touchdown run.

Horvath picked up his second touchdown of the game with 5:56 to go in the third quarter, carrying it in from 10 yards out.

Ceylon’s Clay Gust ran off the edge for a 15-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to make it 22-0 for the Selects.

The Elite broke up the shutout a few minutes later, but Moose Jaw’s Kaiden Smith-Schoffer picked off the Elite for his second interception of the game late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

The Selects will be on the field for a pair of games on Sunday, starting with a showdown against the Alamo City Red Raiders at 11 a.m.
