Starting out their regular season with a record of 6-0, the Under-12 Estevan Elite girls softball team continued their hot start into Regina over the weekend, and came away with a gold medal.

Taking part in the Sharon Knott Memorial Tournament, Estevan cruised past the competition and took out the Pilot Butte/White City Storm in the gold medal game.

"Every game was similar, strong pitching and a very balanced offense that mercy ruled every team," explained Shawn Madsen, whose daughter plays on the team. "They have a balanced offense that they can go through the order and there isn't a weak spot. Then you go up against the pitching and they shut them down. It's a strong team."

Coming up for the Under-12 girls will be a tournament in Saskatoon this weekend, which Madsen thinks will be a great test for the girls from Estevan.

"The north is always tough. I think they have a little bit tougher quality ball players in the north half of Saskatchewan and I can't explain why, but they do. It will be good to see where they fit with this test this weekend."

The girls travel to Saskatoon on Friday.
