Those responding to emergency calls are also often at the mercy of the road conditions. With the recent snow fall creating some treacherous conditions both inside and around Estevan, responding to calls in a quick but safe manner can become tricky.

"We do lights and sirens when we get calls that are serious in nature," explained Sgt Evan Handley with the Estevan Police Service, "and I know that members make sure that we're very safe when we go through streets and intersections. But we want to respond to all calls as safely but as urgently as we can if there's a need."

"We want everyone to slow down. Remember that the intersections are going to be icy as it gets warmer. Take that extra time in the school zones, round the parks, when you people on the corners because we all tend to forget that it takes that extra bit of time to slow down and a lot of extra time to stop when the roads are icy."

Fire Chief Dale Feser, also shared that it's important for all drivers to watch out.

"Even though we are driving emergency vehicles, we have to make sure that we are keeping everybody's safety in mind. Obviously if we get into an accident, we're not going to be able to do our job. So we constantly adjust our driving speeds as well. That's all the more reason, when you do see those lights, please yield the right of way so that way, we're not going to make any evasive maneuvers to try to get to that destination."
