The Special Olympics programs hosted their training day to be a Special Olympics coach in Estevan Sunday, December 16, 2018. Kandyce Meili coordinator, "We had the Special Olympics Active Start and FUNdamentals a 12-week program, for kids with special needs and with any disability really." It all started January 4th with a try-it camp, where you could come out and try just to see what the programs are like and there were different stations set up that the coaches went through.

"We had a great 12 weeks," Meili goes on to say it all wraps up tonight. "We had 21 kids registered in the program, and all the feedback I have got from it is really positive. For the parents and kids, it's been a lot of fun. The coaches have definitely learned a lot about and from these kids, and they've all improved greatly."

"Right from the beginning when I contacted Special Olympics Saskatchewan, they were incredibly helpful in providing any support that I needed. And when I brought this to the community, the community support has been great. The coaches themselves, we have 7 trained coaches that are just volunteering and putting in their time." Meili adds that parents, grandparents are all helping out along with the coaches and the impact that you see is amazing.

For the Active Start for ages 2 to 6, and FUNdamentals for ages 7 to 12 Meili adds, "With this program specifically we will be running 2 sessions every year, we will have a fall session and people will be able to register for that at city-wide in the fall. And then again we will have a winter session, 12 weeks starting in September and then 12 weeks starting in January again for this program specifically."

Special Olympics Estevan will also have some free events coming our way April 4th and 5th for ages 12 to 17, at the Cross fit gym. And then another at Woodlawn Golf Course for their try-it events this spring.
