A few things were on the docket for the August 14th edition of Estevan City Council.

The Estevan Royal Canadian Legion made a request to council for financial support. It has come to the attention of the Legion that the books had not been kept up and as such, they are facing some significant financial problems. They asked the council for help with either a cash support on a loan. After a few questions and answers, the council decided to meet with the Legion to go over their books to see what help could be available before committing to anything.

"It was a very heartfelt presentation," explained Mayor Roy Ludwig. "It's very unfortunate that the Legion finds itself in this situation and I'm sure council will discuss different ideas of what we can do to help. They are a pillar in our community, they've done so much good with donations over the years. Hopefully we can do something that will help them out and keep them afloat in our community."

"It gets somewhat political and with this council we have gone back and forth, should we deny every request or what should we do? Actually, we're going over that whole policy again so you'll see  new policy coming from council on that and we've had lots of discussion and we'll have lots more on that."

Right now the policy is up to $5,000 a year is available for these types of situations.

"What we'll do with the Legion at this point in time, we don't know. We'll probably have our people go over the books, maybe just makes suggestions."

Other matters discussed was the recognition of Army Cadet Bailey Gaignard who received a certificate of recognition for the work he has done with the Army Cadets.

"We're very proud of Cadet Gaignard and we\re more than willing to give a certificate of recognition to this young person who has gone above and beyond and is well respected by his peers and we're very proud of the work he has done for the Army Cadets."

Another community group celebrated by the Council was the Estevan Lions who are celebrating 60 years as a service group in Estevan.

"The lions have been another great organization within our city, they have done so much, raising money and helping whatever the cause may be within the community. We're very proud that they've reached their 60th Anniversary, a milestone. And we wish them another 60 positive years moving forward."
