Blue flashing lights are the new item being touted by the the provincial government as instruments to improve safety on the highways.

Brandi Leippi with the Ministry of Highways noted that they have been used to success on their snowplows.

"The general consensus is that our operators have noticed that motorists do slow down, and the blue lights have brought more awareness to the requirement to reduce your speed."

Now, the government has made the same thing optional for tow truck drivers, who are often at great risk when attending scenes on the side of the road.

"It is our hope that blue lights on these units will further reinforce the need for people to slow down and exercise caution around all roadside workers," Leippi said.

She expressed, however, that it is rather early yet, so it will be a wait-and-see process to determine it's effectiveness.

"Part of the legislation's purpose was to increase visibility," she added.

"We will also be continuing our other educational campaigns about slowing down."

"Drivers who fail to exercise the basic safety steps and common sense put everyone, roadside workers and drivers and their passengers alike, at risk," Leippi concluded.
