Neighbors helping neighbors, it's one of the hallmarks of Canadians and our giving spirit.

You need to look no further than small town southeast Saskatchewan and the city of Estevan to see that attitude on a daily basis. But there's one day in particular that, over the past nine years, has really put that community spirit in the spotlight.

The Day of Caring, an annual event organized and spearheaded by the local United Way Estevan, returns to the Energy City on May 24th. Since starting in 2008, board members with the United Way along with hundreds of volunteers take time out of their regular work day to help complete dozens of "projects" for others in Estevan.

"It's one of our 'Community Impact' projects and it is our way of giving back to the community," expressed Wendy Gustafson, Chair of the Day of Caring committee with the United Way Estevan.

"The community and surrounding area are always right there for us when we have our Telethon in the fall. We can only pull it off with the help of the people around here. So this is one of the ways that we can repay them for their support."

The workload during the Day of Caring has steadily increased year-over-year, with a record number of projects (44) submitted for the 2017 edition. To complete the tasks, approximately 150 volunteers will put on their work gloves and lend a hand.

"It's about 10 more projects than (2016), which is great to see," adds Patrick Fisher, President of the United Way Estevan. "Some projects will only take an hour or so to complete, while others will take the majority of the day."

The projects include a variety of tasks, all geared towards those that are unable to complete the work due to a lack of time or being unable to physically handle the work. Examples include weeding flower beds, trimming trees and hedges, painting fences, or simply visiting those in long-term care.

A BBQ lunch will also be hosted to support the Day of Caring inside the Estevan Alliance Church.

The Day of Caring is one of two 'Community Impact' projects for the United Way Estevan along with the Hillcrest Breakfast program. The United Way Estevan supports 15 member agencies that serve southeast Saskatchewan.
