Keith Dunford was released on bail just hours after his sentencing in Weyburn for dangerous driving causing death.

Dunford's lawyer, Aaron Fox, told Discover Estevan that Dunford is appealing both the conviction and the sentence. Dunford was set free pending the appeal.

The 47-year old Dunford was sentenced to 2 years less a day after striking and killing a flag person with his vehicle in a construction zone near Midale in 2012. He was taken from the courthouse in Weyburn in handcuffs.  The professional truck driver was also banned from driving for three years after serving his sentence. Dunford was also ordered to pay a $200 victim surcharge for his dangerous driving causing death conviction in the accident that killed 18-year-old Ashley Richards.

There have been reports that Richards was pregnant, but Fox also told Discover Weyburn that an autopsy showed she was not.

Friday, Justice Lana Krogan said denunciation and deterrence played a role in the sentence. She also said Dunford posed no risk to society, having no prior criminal record and little risk to re-offend.
