Despite a windy, snowy night, the Estevan Police Service were out driving around the city.

"While we were out patrolling around," shared Sgt Craig Bird, "we ended up stopping a vehicle and charged a 27-year-old with possession of cannabis in a vehicle."

The driver was given a $360 fine.

While it is legal to have cannabis, there are strict rules about how to transport it.

"It's similar to alcohol. As long as it stays sealed in the original package, put away from the driver, then you can transport it from A to B. You can't just drive around town with it or have it open in the vehicle because that could end up with charges."

He added that you can transport up to 30 grams legally.

Another vehicle was also stopped last night and failed a roadside screening device. That driver was taken back to the police station and charged with impaired driving. The vehicle was impounded and the driver will be in court later this month.
