After a lengthy contest between the young members of the community, a name has been chosen for the Estevan Police Service's new furry member.

It was unveiled at Saturday's bike rodeo at Affinity Place. The moniker selected? K-9 'Max'.

"The reason that we went with 'Max', is that it 'maximizes' public safety in our community," explained Police Chief Paul Ladouceur, "We though that it is a good, well grounded name and the handler was happy with it."

Liam Flavell, a grade 2 student at Hillcrest School, was the recipient of an iPad for his class as a result of his recommendation being chosen.

"It's important to note that we had several submissions with the name Max, so we did a draw for the name, and Liam and his class were the successful winners," Ladoucuer said, adding that those who sent in similar recommendations should be proud of their choice as well, and will get a chance to meet the dog and get a photo with it.

"It's a community name, a community dog and a community police service, so it's great that they got the opportunity to pick the name."
