It's that time of year again when kids and adults alike will be hitting the streets on their bicycles.

"When it comes to bicycle safety," shared Deputy Police Chief, Murray Cowan, "from our position at the police service, we really want to encourage kids and adults to wear the proper safety equipment in particular, bicycle helmets."

"They're not always the most comfortable things to wear but they're certainly an important piece of safety equipment that can save your life."

Wearing a helmet can also prevent serious injury should you be involved in an accident.

"And an accident doesn't necessarily mean being struck by a vehicle or that type of thing. It's just simply falling off or hitting a bump or hitting the curb and falling off if you bang your head."

"Also when you're riding in the evening there are bylaws in place about having the proper lighting on your bicycle. And we encourage people as well to wear reflective clothing. It's no different from walking, you can be hard to see."

"When it comes to motorists, they need to be aware, especially young people tend to get distracted. Just be aware and be safe out there."
