Just before 9:00 AM on January 9th, the Estevan Fire Department was dispatched to the Estevan Regional Nursing Home due to a call about the smell of smoke.

"Once we arrived on scene, the staff did a great job of isolating the area and evacuating the residents to a safe location within [the facility]. We took a look around and at first indication, we thought it was caused by an electrical component from one of the electrical assisted beds," explained Fire Chief Dale Feser.

Upon further inspection, the team found the source from one of the rooms.

"However, after using a thermal imaging camera, we found it to be the actual mini-fridge inside one of the rooms. It was unplugged and allowed to cool down for a bit. It was able to retain its heat, it was definitively the cause of the problem. Staff has been notified and will be fixing the issue."

The team wasted no time in solving the issue due to some residents having some respiratory problems.
