Folks driving to or by the Estevan Regional Airport may see something new at the entrance, as a slick and eye catching sign was installed Thursday morning.

"We're really happy just to have it. It was made more aware to us back when we had the airshow last year, that the public mentioned that there's no sign showing that 'this is the airport right here'," explained Airport Manager Richard Reetz.

"Those comments made it back to council and we started looking into the possibility of having a sign. We wanted something that would match what Estevan already has for signage, but also be unique for the airport."

Designs were sought from local contractors, then Council and the Airport Liasion committee made their pick. Residents will notice that the font will be similar to other such signs around the City.

"For funding, it was done through the airport budget. We were able to have some cost savings just due to the really nice winter here, and so it was approved by City Council," Reetz said.

The unit is all aluminum with steel construction to withstand Saskatchewan's weather, and a bit of landscaping will be the only upkeep required.

"We were looking into several options for lighting the sign, which got very expensive very quickly, so we actually went with an LED spotlight option. We didn't have to transfer or put in new power, we were able to just use electricity off the existing streetlight and an LED spotlight off of it," he shared, adding that it was the most cost effective route.

"We're really pleased to have this. It'll make the airport a little easier to find and show us off to the public," Reetz concluded.
