Colleen McMillen Director of the Estevan Family Resource Centre, "We have people ask us all the time, can we rent the Resource Centre for a birthday party? And we used to do that years ago and we had little control over things that got broken, especially people who are using it for just one day a year and they weren't actually connected to the Family Centre. So because the center had limited funds we run on volunteers that come in on specific days, particularly Friday's is our volunteer-run day. So we needed something to give back to these people who are giving their time to us. And so we felt the best way to do that was to offer the center to them in off hours. So if you've accumulated 10 hours of volunteering over the year, then you can use the center for a child's birthday party or whatever you need it for. SO that's an incentive for that."

McMillen shares the ingenious idea one of the volunteer mothers had, "The birthday party that was here over the weekend, it is a mom that regularly volunteers with us. And she said her daughter has everything and doesn't need anything so what she did was put the invitation out to all of her daughter's little friends and said in lieu of presents for her daughter, she requested cleaning products for the Family Centre."

"It's wonderful, its a really nice gesture, something we are seeing more and more of with our volunteers." She goes on to say, "They're already giving and they're finding ways to give even more. And I think in part its because they are so connected to the center, and connected to the programs. They know the programs are free, but really want to give back and finding ways to volunteer their time."

"We are pretty connected to the families that come here, we know everyone pretty well by name. And you know when they don't come for a little while, we are like where are these people. We feel connected to the community, and we are happy that the community feels just as connected to us."
