After months of hard work and reliance on the generosity of the Energy City, the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity has finally met their monetary goal.

They are now able to move forward and begin building a house for a family in need, right here in Estevan.

"The purchase of the lot is taking place right now, and it will likely take a week to ten days or longer to get through land titles," shared Doug Barnstable, the chairman of the project's steering committee.

"Then we will be applying for a building permit with the City, once we have the lot confirmation, and then we will hopefully be able to start construction shortly after that."

"We're looking at likely a minimum of two weeks before we will be able to do something on the site," he added.

"Our plan is to actually start the construction as soon as we have the permit available to us. We'll be having a ground breaking ceremony later in the summer, however, we may have some significant work completed before then. There's no use waiting for a time when everybody can show up for the ceremony and lose construction time, so we'll be going ahead with the project as soon as we are able."

Among the latest initiatives that pushed them over the edge was a fundraiser held on Friday, June 16, where Southern Plains Co-op donated ten cents for every liter of fuel purchased towards the charity organization's cause. This garnered 40,000 liters of fuel, or $4,000.
