It is no secret the the Estevn Police Service is cracking down on impaired drivers. They conducted a high visablilty check-stop over the weekend and encountered one unusual incident.

"Officers had set a check-stop up of 47 South, just down by the speed curve," explains Murray Cowan, Deputy Police Chief. "And they weren't set up very long, just a matter of minutes when a vehicle came from the south and it was obviously that upon seeing the check-stop, stopped suddenly and made a U-turn and took off the other way."

He adds that the EPS is aware that some individuals try these maneuvers and they have a plan in place for these types of situations.

"Whenever we do check-stops, we always have, what we call a chase car, or a car that's in position to run after a vehicle like that to stop it. And when they did, in this case, the people jumped out of the car and started running."

They didn't get away however.

"There was evidence left in the car that members were able to use to determine who these people were. So that matter is continuing. They've already spoken to some of the people involved including the driver so as far as charges go, we're still looking into that at this time."

"We make no secret, these are high visibility check-stops. We want people to see us out there. Obviously we set them up so people have to come through them. And there's always a plan in place if someone tries to do that or turn off at an intersection ahead of where the check-stop is. It's pretty obvious when people do that type of thing, they're obviously avoiding the check-stop which means they have something to hide."

"At the end of the day, don't drink and drive and don't break the law and you'll have no problem, in fact, you'll go through those check-stops very quickly."
