Many experts say that the first meal of the day is the most important one. For most of us, that would be our breakfast.

Those experts also say that it is especially important for children to eat properly. However, a trend that is showing itself to be more and more common happens to go in just the opposite direction. Kids are sometimes showing up to school in the morning hungry.

That's where the Hillcrest School Breakfast Program comes in, and Sarah Pippus revealed what kind of effect a good breakfast can have for students.

"We find that when the kids have had that meal, they settle a lot easier. That makes it easier for them to learn, and it makes things easier for the teachers. That ongoing relationship throughout the day is better because they started off with a full stomach in the morning."

She also noted a common reason that this happens.

"Sometimes people think that there must be something wrong at home. For the most part, however, we just find that a lot of families are busy getting out the door in the morning, and often times breakfast is the thing that is overlooked."

Pippus added that the program becomes more than just a breakfast.

"I find that a lot of our kids later on use our volunteers as connections or references."

"It's a really good method to get to know our community in a positive way," she concluded.
