The Humane Society is bringing awareness to schools in the Estevan area, by bringing a parade of animals into the classroom.

Elizabeth Murphy Manager at the Estevan Humane Society, "We're visiting the schools in the month of May just to raise awareness on pet safety, educate the kids on what we do at the shelter, and get them involved in our 9th Annual Dr. Howard Memorial Dog Jog." The kids are some of the main contributors when raising funds for the Dog Jog. Whoever raises the most with pledges will win some prizes, but you do not need a dog to participate in the Dog Jog.

"A lot of the kids have been asking things like 'What is the strangest pet the Humane Society has had?'" Murphy goes on to share that the kids are very smart with the questions they ask during the presentation, "It's great for the kids to ask the smart questions because sometimes we can have anywhere from 300 animals come through our shelter in a year."

Some of the topics the Humane Society is teaching the kids about is safety and proper pet etiquette, "Pet safety is crucial because animals can't talk to us the way people do, so they can't tell you in they need space. So it's great to educate kids on cues to look for, with dogs especially when they're scared or nervous. Its good for kids to know when to give a dog a break so they don't get into a situation where they may get hurt."

The Humane Society brought out a dog and some cute kittens to show the kids they types of animals they can adopt, "We have 14 kittens at the shelter that are looking to be adopted into their forever homes," Murphy goes on to share that you can always go visit the shelter and volunteer your time to help out with walking or cuddling the animals.
