He's been in the Energy City for less than a month, and yet he is already moving forward on his ambitious plans to improve healthcare in the region.

Dr. Ahmad Sawwan came as an obstetrician and gynecologist, however, he also expressed an interest in bettering women's health in general for the community.

"When we first met with him back in December, when we were recruiting him, it was something that he raised with us about the potential to start a cervical cancer screening clinic in Estevan," said Greg Hoffart, the CEO of the St. Joseph's Hospital.

"Now that he is here, we are in discussions with him and our management staff to uncover all the hurdles necessary to make this very important program happen."

Hoffart noted that cervical cancer is the fourth highest cancer diagnosed in women in 2016.

"That tells you the importance of this. Up until now, local people would have to go to Regina for this procedure, so to bring it closer to home is always one of our goals for as many services as we can in Estevan."

"Another very important piece of the puzzle is the purchase of the specialized equipment that is necessary for this process. This drives home the importance of the St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation and their fundraising events," he added.

Hoffart shared that the funds raised from the Foundation's upcoming Color My Foundation Run will go towards the purchase of the equipment, estimated at around $60,000.

"In addition to acquiring the equipment we will be ironing out the processes, getting the space in order and preparing the staff. All this will be going on in the background to make this program possible."

He revealed that they hope to have the clinic up and running by early fall.
