Kevin Obina Okafor, 37, of Yellow Grass appeared in Regina Provincial Court yesterday via video conference. Nothing came out of the appearance other than his next court date which will be Monday, May 8.
Okafor is facing first-degree murder charges as well as charges for flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He allegedly killed 33-year-old Abbie Speir, also of Yellow Grass, on April 20 before fleeing west. RCMP apprehended him near Swift Current hours after Speir's body was found in her home near the edge of town at 307 Brome Street. Speir's body was only found when emergency crews responded to reports of a house fire. The Yellow Grass fire department was the first on the scene.
RCMP said Okafor and Speir were known to each other. Those who knew both Okafor and Speir report they had been in a relationship.
