With warmer temperatures, people are going to be outside more and the risk of skin damage increases. One thing to watch out for is the harmful effects from the ultra violet rays of the sun.

"The UV index is important, anytime of year," explains John Paul Cragg, regional meteorologist, "but now that the sun is high in the sky, and people are going out, with more skin exposed, it is important that you protect yourself from those UV rays."

He adds that information is easy to access on how quickly the sun can do damage.

"We have a UV index forecast on the environment Canada website, it will tell you how much sunscreen you should put on when you're outside. It's important to put on sunscreen anyways, but with that UV index, you know how strong the ultra violet rays will be on a given day."

He notes that as the index increases, the need to take precautions increases.

"Pretty much anytime over the summer, you want to be careful when you're outside because the sun's rays can do some damage.
