Residents of Estevan may soon have the opportunity to deal with their compostable waste in a cleaner, more environmentally friendly manner.

"We are in development of a compost project for the community," explains Travis Frank, the Sales and Marketing Manager at Regens Disposal. "We had our first  initial launch at Savour the Southeast this year which was quite a success."

At the event, Regens provided compostable materials for all the vendors in an effort create a cleaner event and have less go to the landfill.

"That was the very first kick at compost that we've done and are just working on some of the logistics and hope to launch something in the near future."

"How it would work is much like our single stream recycling program, you would have a cart at your house, any compostable products would be put in the cart. We would then empty that and take it back to our landfill where we would handle it separately from any other trash or waste and turn it into a compostable product which would then be sold to likely, a third party vendor."

"What we would do if we were to launch it would be a subscription program where customers would opt into it through us. This would not be a City offered solution but instead it would likely go 100% through us. We would provide the cart then to the resident and set up a schedule and pick it up much like your current trash or recycling system. But it wouldn't be billed through your water bill and it wouldn't be mandatory for customers to into it at the start."

He noted that the City could offer the program in the future.

"If the City would choose to go with this and offer it to all residents down the road that's something that could be discussed. But to start with, because we know that some people are very interested in it, some people are not, we would likely end up just launching it as a subscription based service."

he adds that at this point, they are just testing the program and have no dates set for an official launch.
