SaskPower is one step closer to their goal of providing clean, renewable energy to the province with the announcement of an agree with the geothermal company, DEEP Earth Energy Productions.

"This is a power purchase agreement," explains Jonathan Tremblay, a spokesperson with SaskPower, "So basically we and the DEEP project have confirmed that we would buy the power once the project is complete."

SaskPower has committed to move towards clean energy and Tremblay points out that they already use many forms of renewable energy to generate electricity.

"We're at about 25% of our capacity is renewable, mostly hydro with about 3% and wind and by 2030, we want half of our capacity to be from renewable sources."

Geothermal would be another tool for them.

"It would be relatively small, all things considered since we're talking about many, many megawatts that we need for power. We're looking right now at 1 megawatt is about the equivalent of 1000 households. We're looking at 60 megawatts for solar for example and we're looking at over 1000 megawatts of wind as well."

"This project will help us see the viability of geothermal in our province. This would be a demonstration that will allow us to make future decisions and see if we can add more geothermal to our mix in addition to hydro, wind and solar."

He adds that SaskPower is always looking at different way to provide power across the Saskatchewan.

"This is one of many studies and partnerships that we do to evaluate new options for the future. Carbon Capture is another example of a demonstration project technology that will help us make future decisions if CCS can be a bigger part and when that will happen. We're also looking at import agreements with Manitoba, maybe we can get some hydroelectricity that way."

"There are a lot of projects that will contribute a diverse mix. We want to make sure we're not too reliant on a single source. So that's why we have a mix and why we definitely need things like geothermal."
