At around 6:30pm Tuesday evening, a potentially deadly speeding incident caused concern from the neighborhood around Wellock Road on the north end of Estevan.

A white half-ton truck was observed racing eastbound on Wellock Road, flying over speed humps approaching the 4-way stop intersection of Wellock & Nicholson Road. While unconfirmed, the truck was believed to be travelling between 80-100 km/h.

The truck blew the intersection turning south down Nicholson, but the speed at which the vehicle was travelling caused the truck to hop the curb and crash into the stop sign. The truck came to a stop in the driveway of a residence on the corner just a few feet away.

Initial reports are that the suspect fled the scene on foot through the neighborhood and has since been taken into custody by Estevan Police Service.

Estevan RCMP was first on the scene, having followed the vehicle into the city after receiving a complaint of a speeding vehicle travelling east from Weyburn on Highway 39.

"We attempted to initiate a traffic stop upon locating the vehicle which appeared to be travelling at a high rate of speed," stated Constable Chad Mehl with the Estevan RCMP, who was on the scene of the abandoned truck. "Upon rounding the road north towards the hospital and rounding Wellock Road, the suspect continued travelling at a high rate of speed and was not stopping for police."

"It was at that time that any attempt to have a pursuit was terminated and the truck was let to go, last seen at a high rate of speed going down Wellock Road. A short time later, I rolled onto the site and discovered the truck had collided into a stop sign."

Cst. Mehl added that it is standard protocol to not engage in a high-speed pursuit within city limits in the interest of public safety.

Estevan Police Service is believed to have obtained the suspect. DiscoverEstevan is working to confirm those details at this time.

Stop Sign. The incident instantly drew a crowd from the neighbors around the intersection, as those outside within a 2-3 block radius heard the loud bang of the stop sign collision.

One resident, who was just two houses away from the intersection, said, "My grandparents were on their way over, so that was my immediate concern and I came running out to see what had happened."

Initial reports are that no one has been injured or involved in the incident aside from the driver of the vehicle.
