St Patrick's Day is on Sunday, and We went out and asked some local people in our community what their St Patrick's Day traditions are.

"For St. Patrick's day, my family and I go hiking and stuff, like little walks, and my Grandma and Grandpa have a clover patch in their yard," shared Emily Wasacase. "So everybody goes to the clover patch and tries to find a 4-leaf clover, but my Grandpa found a 7-leaf clover once." Emily and her family enjoy looking for clovers and spending time together.

"I wear green," explained Keegan Littlefield, "because that's the colour of St Patrick's Day."

Not only is it a tradition to wear green but according to folklore, if you don't wear green people can pinch you to remind you to wear green as leprechauns enjoy pinching people and it's said that if you wear green, you are invisible to leprechauns and won't get pinched. Leprechauns are also known to be mischievous little creatures who play tricks on people, one local class has had a run in with a leprechaun in the past few years on St. Patrick's day.

"In grade 2 we thought that leprechauns were real because someone had taken a student's cupcake and hid it somewhere in the school and we had trouble looking for it," said Charlie Hayes

"We set a trap for the leprechaun because every year that I have taught at Hillcrest school," explains Brian Hayes, Local Teacher. "I've always had a little visitor by the name of Sheamus, and he comes into my classroom, and he terrorizes the place, he turns the desks upside down when we're not in there, and he always manages to steal the treats for the day. He then leaves us a mysterious note, and this note leads us on a big scavenger hunt with math questions all around the school. It's a real big headache; I don't Like St. Patrick's day because this always manages to happen to me. My whole class gets derailed, and we're trying to track down our treats using math questions."

"We thought that year we would do something about him and we set a trap for Sheamus, and it didn't work the way we thought it would. When we came into the room, the trap was set, and our great big bin fell but it looked like he cut his way out the side."

Charlie Hayes shared that he plans to spend the day with his family and friends. Everyone agreed they are wearing green on St. Paddy's day and Liam Flavell said that if you don't wear green "you get pinched, can't pinch anyone who isn't wearing green or you'll get cursed."

From all of us at Golden West Radio, we wish you a happy and safe St. Paddy's day!
