The teams that fix and maintain the school buses that carry children to and from their place of education day in and day out keep their equipment at the highest standard of serviceability. However, when school is in session, challenges arise when they attempt anything more in-depth. This means that the maintenance crews' busy season is when the kids are off.

"In the summer, all the buses come in. We probably have about 20 that need to be safetied, we do safeties all during the year but we kind of leave a few of them for the summertime, especially the far away ones," explained Evelyne McWilliams, the Transportation Supervisor for the southeast corner of the Southeast Cornerstone School Division.

"They literally go through every single bus before school starts up again, just to make sure everything is up to par, (making sure) all the lights are working, seats are in good shape, the buses are running top notch. We don't really slow down, it's maintenance all year long, (but) it's strongest in summertime because we have all the buses."

She added that this lets them catch their breath and follow up on the smaller items that pop up in the first couple weeks of school.

"For the safety of the buses, we are par-none for anybody else, because we're hauling kids. Nothing gets overlooked. If it's not safe, the bus doesn't roll."

McWilliams also stated that her and her team's standards intentionally exceed those of SGI, and they confidentially welcome any inspection or question from the agency.
