Now that the thermometer is staying fairly consistent on the positive side of the scale, the Woodlawn Regional Park is getting ready for the summer season. Applications for weekend and casual camping passes have opened up as of midnight March 15.

"The park officially opens for the public on May long weekend, May 17th," says manager at the park Maureen Daoust. "We are looking forward to having our seasonals back and some new people joining seasonal families at both parks and any short term campers that come visit us in between."

The park took a bit of a hit near the end of last year thanks to a nasty storm that made it's way into Estevan, but everything has been cleaned up, including the majority of the trees that were knocked down from the high winds.

"Everything has pretty much been cleaned up, we had some unbudgeted expense. We had to hire a contractor for that cause there was lots of things we couldn't take care of ourselves and we had a few volunteers and staff come down and clean up so we're good to go from that."

The park has planted some trees in place of the ones that were taken out, and now they plan on using all the wood from the trees that were knocked down from the storm as firewood for the park once it dries out a little more. Besides that, a few minor trims and details to the park are going to be cleaned up before the season.

"We had a lot of projects last year, and we're kind of just taking a breather and trying to focus on just maintaining the park, we're going to do some tree trimming in the spring on our sites here because some of them are overgrown and we need to trim those up. Lots of people come in with bigger RV's and it's a bit of a trick to get in their safely."

Last year was one of the busier seasons at Woodlawn, as they had actually rented out some of the vacant seasonal sites to casual campers when things got too full and busy.
