Obina Okafor will appear in court again via video conference on Wednesday morning. The judge granted him the time to find legal council.

RCMP say Kevin Obina Okafor was arrested near Swift Current Thursday night just hours after emergency crews responded to reports of a house fire at 307 Brome St. in Yellow Grass.

There, the emergency crews discovered the body of 33-year-old Abbie Speirs who was known to Okafor according to police. The RCMP identified a suspect, along with a description of the white, Dodge truck he typically drove.

RCMP then located the truck traveling westbound on Highway 1 near Swift Current.

After police activated their lights and sirens, Okafor, who was driving the truck, failed to stop. With the assistance of the Swift Current and Morse RCMP a spike belt was successfully deployed. The truck was rendered inoperable and went into the ditch eventually coming to a stop on its side.

Okafor was uninjured and arrested at the scene resulting in the additional driving-related charges including fleeing a police officer and dangerous use of a motor vehicle.

RCMP said at no point was there any risk or danger to other motorists.
