Calls going through SaskTel's landline system have increased drastically, while some of their other services are also being used more.

As of Monday, they had a 100-per-cent increase in long-distance call attempts going through their wireline system over a seven-day period, compared to the previous week.

The Crown corporation said a lot of that is toll-free calling, and attributed that to an increase in conference calls.

"Teleconferencing and videoconferencing vendors are working diligently to add system resources to handle the increase in demand," a SaskTel spokesperson said in an email.

Wireless voice traffic jumped 16 per cent over the seven-day period.

There was also a bump of content delivery for maxTV, with traffic increasing by 10-18 per cent compared to the previous week.

SaskTel also said they had "very small growth" in provincial data traffic, at about five per cent, and an increase in their national internet traffic by around 25 to 30 per cent.

SaskTel has invested $1.4 billion in its networks over the past 5 years to enhance and expand wireless, television, internet, data, and IP-based technologies across the province.

The Crown corporation said they're taking necessary measures to make sure the network continues to perform well with an increased need for communications services as customers work from home and remotely.
