The Estevan Pathways Project is reportedly well on its way to being completed by the end of the year. But the City encountered an issue with CP Rail, halting construction in one area.

City Engineer Kiflom Weldeab said the $3.8-million, provincially-funded project is over halfway done when he appeared at the September 7 city council meeting.

Weldeab said they had no problem getting the green light from CP to build a crosswalk at the southern crossing on Kensington Avenue. But they dealt with someone else from CP Rail for the northern crossing on Kensington, and haven't been able to complete that section of pathway yet.

"CP is in discussions with the City and once a proposal is submitted, we will review the request to add a pedestrian crosswalk to the north crossing over Kensington Ave," a spokesperson for CP wrote in an email today.

Estevan's request for provincial funding for the project was approved under the requirement that the work is completed by the end of the calendar year.

Weldeab said the project is proceeding overall at "lightning" speed. He said the concrete work should be done in the next week or two (from September 7) and that the asphalt is progressing well.
