The Estevan Car Club will be bringing its monthly Show and Shine downtown this year in an effort to increase activity in the downtown area.

In a letter to Estevan City Council, the club proposed using the vacant Kal Tire lot next to McDonald's.

The city has agreed to let them use the lot after discussing it at its council meeting Monday night.

"I think it's exactly what we're looking to have downtown, is people coming to the area," said Councillor Lindsay Clark. "I think it'll be a great opportunity for them as well as for our community to bring people there."

Councillor Kirsten Walliser also suggested the car club reach out to the nearby businesses who use the lot for parking, or perhaps post a sign 24 hours in advance indicating that they'll be using the lot to allow people to avoid the area, while Councillor Shelly Veroba suggested the city's tourism department communicate the event and put in on their calendar of events.

Councillor Travis Frank agreed that it would be a good event to hold downtown.

"I think this is a really cool idea to bring to the downtown," Frank said. "Just in regards to the (Orpheum) Theatre, Friday night can be a busy time, so just something for that group to be considerate of."

"But I think the idea of being able to go downtown, if you are going to a show or going for a meal, and seeing all those cool cars parked along there is exactly what we want downtown."

The Estevan Car Club plans to meet on the third Friday of each month at 6 p.m. this summer:

  • May 19
  • June 16
  • July 21
  • August 18
  • September 15

The City currently owns the lot, having purchased it last year as part of its downtown revitalization project.
