Estevan was well-represented at this year's Saskatchewan Independent Film Awards, a yearly festival that celebrates independent filmmakers in the province.

Curtis McGillivray, who was born and raised in Estevan, and his film crew were the recipients of the Audience Choice Award after receiving votes from both the live audience and online. He group was also nominated for a second award.

"It was a really exciting night for myself. We were nominated in the best long-form category for our web series, which is something we've been working on over the past three or four years," he said. "And that was super exciting to be able to take home that award (Audience Choice Award) and be able to celebrate all the hard work that our casting crew and everybody does to help make the web series possible in one of our first festivals that we've submitted to."

The awards show was held at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum Theatre in Regina.

McGillivray said his team plans to submit their web series to other festivals across North America, but they have their eye on one in particular that is close to home.

"The other big one in Saskatchewan that we're really gearing up for is the Yorkton Film Festival, which is one of the largest running film festivals not only in Saskatchewan but in Canada in general I think," he said. "We submitted to that festival, and we are waiting until about May next year to get the news on whether or not we get nominated or have any chance at winning any awards in that, so we're really excited about that."

He added that the film industry is growing in Saskatchewan.

"There's a lot of fresh air that's coming into the Saskatchewan film industry, and there's a lot of things that are happening that are showing a lot of progression in the right direction that I think is going to be really exciting for a lot of people who want to call the film industry a career or a career path."
