A program aimed at supporting families where there is a high risk of violence is expanding.

The provincial government announced on Friday they would be spending $1.1 million to bring the Family Intervention Rapid Support Team program to five more communities: Moose Jaw, Estevan, Weyburn, Carlyle and Nipawin. The program will be delivered by Envision Counselling and Support Centre, The Moose Jaw Transition House and North East Outreach and Support Services.

"Enhancing community safety and the well-being of Saskatchewan families is paramount," Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said. "The FIRST program effectively supports families at a higher risk for violence with early intervention techniques that help to mitigate potential crisis situations at home."

The organizations that will be delivering the program have outreach workers in place to help build relationships with families in the community. This will include intervening early to provide services for families in crisis.

The program was first launched in Kindersley this past fall, where it is delivered by the West Central Crisis and Family Support Centre.
