The Coal Country Run is taking place this weekend, with all proceeds going towards Fresh Air Fitness upgrades.

“This year we are going to be adding disc golf to the course, and that money will go towards that,” said Peggy Rohatyn, organizer of the event. “We also use some of the money from Fresh Air Fitness for decorating the lights at the Festival of Lights down at the park at Christmas.”

"My personal favorite is, of course, the little mini milers because they're so excited. They all get a medal, and they're just so much fun to watch."

Rohatyn explained the different components of the Coal Country Run, including a cycling portion that will start the day at 9:45 a.m. and take cyclists around the new paths in Estevan. The 5K and 10K walk/run will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the mini mile at 11:30 a.m. Race package pick-up will be at Rotary Hall located at Woodlawn Park on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., as well as on Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

She added that it's a great chance to bring out the stroller and explore the park. “If you’ve not been, it’s a chance to see how really pretty it is down there.”

A couple of reminders to participants: everyone is welcome, but dogs and animals are prohibited during the event. For safety reasons, rollerblades are also not allowed. For those taking part in the walk, it is recommended to arrive a bit early to sign in and prepare for the race.

The Co-op will provide lunch, and there will also be door prizes, ice cream, and tables from local organizations such as Estevan Minor Football.

Local athletes Lloyd and Roanna Sehn will be volunteering and cheering on participants. After the event, they will share their inspiring experience of racing through the Sahara Desert, answer questions, and display photos, making for a memorable and motivating conclusion to the day's festivities.
