Operation Clean Sweep is once again underway, with the city of Estevan providing some help for anyone looking to finish up yard work as leaves are falling.

The program is a twice-a-year event, with another weekend in May serving as the spring version of the cleanup day.

The city encourages cleanup by freeing up a facility for anyone who may want to take part.

Norm Mack, Estevan's Roads and Drainage Manager, explains what people will be able to go for this weekend.

"This weekend, starting Friday, Operation Clean Sweep is starting again," said Mack, "What we're doing is opening the gates at the landfill for the city of Estevan residents to clean up their yards, for organic waste and debris, and take it to the landfill for free. Friday the gates open at 8 AM and close at 5 and Saturday and Sunday the gates open at 10 AM and close at 4."

"It's a perfect opportunity to clean up the city. I think we're going to have a nice weekend, according to the forecast to do that final cleanup in your yards. If you see garbage in your back lanes or down the streets you can pick it up, we're just trying to clean up our city before the snowfalls."

The city also has something new happening this year, with some extra spots citizens can dump off any unwanted organic materials.

These new bins were donated by GFL Environmental, who regularly handle the city's trash.

"I also want to mention this year that we're doing something a little different. We're doing a little test run, GFL has graciously donated a couple of roll-off bins, and they'll be located on 6th street right beside the paper recycling bins," said Mack, "They'll be clearly identified and what we want you to put in there is organic waste. We don't want plastic bags or anything foreign in there so, you could dump for example your grass clippings without a bag or leaves, and we're providing a couple of roll-off bins just for those items, so thanks to GFL."

A few of the exceptions for what will be accepted at the landfill include refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, mattresses, and box springs.
