The Radiothon For Life is closing in closer and closer on May 1st, and all proceeds raised this year are heading towards the mother/baby unit at the hospital. Kelly Vatamaniuck had her son Wyatt in Estevan last year, and says that having this kind of facility right at home is comforting to a whole new level.

"That's just it, you know that if something were to happen quickly, you have support, you have the doctors, you have all the support you need right here in town. Especially since Wyatt was born in the spring and you never know what the weather conditions are going to be like."

Vatamaniuck happens to be one of the registered nurses in the emergency ward at the hospital, so the relationship she shares with the staff in the mother/baby unit is a little tighter than most who are welcomed in as she works with them in the event of C-sections. Still, the difference can be felt when the people helping deliver your child are the ones in your community.

"I actually felt better, we actually got the royal treatment. We were treated like all stars." She adds, "I wasn't uncomfortable at all. You have to get really personal and you have to kind of get over it, but because we all knew each other, I felt fine with everyone's decision and everybody respected mine because they knew what I wanted."

Not only is there the comfort of having your children taken care of by the people you know at the hospital because of the facility we have, but there's the added comfort of having the community of people around you in your own home town right there and ready for you.

"I know a lot of people really like having their babies close to home. You have your family, your friends, and you have lots of support."

The Goldenwest Radiothon for Life is coming on the first day of May. Last year, us along with the community helped raise over 104 thousand dollars.
