The RCMP’s National Youth Advisory Committee (NYAC) is looking for new members.

The committee is made up of up to 125 youth from across the country, according to Tessa Duc, senior youth outreach officer with the National Youth Services Unit of the RCMP.

“We have those youth join us on virtual platforms from October to June every year, and they basically help us create and give feedback on resources, events, [and] programs that we’re running.”

Duc said that each month on the committee centres around a different theme including bullying and cyber bullying, transportation safety, substance use, mental health, or reconciliation.

They have one or two virtual events on the monthly theme. “We have a guest speaker either internal to the RCMP or an external organization come and talk about those topics with the youth.”

“It’s an amazing opportunity for youth to connect with other youth from all the way across the country,” added Duc.

There are two age cohorts (one for ages 13 to 17, and one for ages 18 to 21), and youth can be a member of each cohort one time. Those who have maxed out are still able to be part of the NYAC alumni group.

“We still send them opportunities, we send them information about special dates that are happening, or awareness months,” said Duc.

Duc outlined the benefits of joining the committee, including accruing 20 to 27 volunteer hours and getting a reference letter. “That’s super awesome for employment opportunities, job opportunities, volunteer[ing], school.”

Those interested in applying to be a part of the committee can request an application package by emailing rcmp.youth-jeunesse.grc@rcmp-grc.gc.ca . The deadline for submissions is September 9, 2024, but applicants have a better chance of being on the committee if they apply by July 31, 2024.
