Three southeast residents are the first patients to receive treatment from the Renal Dialysis Unit at St. Joseph's Hospital.

After months of construction and preparation, the $1.7 million unit is officially operational Wednesday.

According to Cal Tant, the CEO of the Sun Country Health Region, being able to offer the treatment in the southeast is invaluable to area patients who previously had to travel to Regina three times a week.

Dialysis is an artificial replacement for lost kidney function with each treatment taking approximately four hours.
