Road conditions are worsening in the southeast with a serious snowstorm perched over the region.

People should make sure they're well-versed in how to drive during the winter.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang talks about what conditions are making driving so dangerous.

"I would think absolutely with a bunch of rain falling and then a bunch of snow falling and temperatures falling below freezing. I think it's really going to make highway driving really quite messy and because towns and cities tend to be snow traps, more snow will get trapped in the cities, so it'll make driving quite messy."

Around five cenitmetres are forecasted for today, with anyone traveling north reminded to watch for heavier snowfall amounts.

"The areas to the north of Yorkton, Hudson Bay, Melfort, Tisdale, and Nipawin up through and there they look like they're going to be the winners in the snow department this time around and not as much farther to the South."

With a warm December so far Lang reminds people to brush up on their driving skills and to check road conditions before heading out.

"I think we kind of get the sense of complacency when it comes to driving. So it's going to be a big shift when people wake up. So check the forecast before heading out, check the highway hotline before heading out, make sure your car is prepared for winter driving conditions, and be prepared to cancel or change your plans."
