As the date for the border to reopen approaches, Canadians are likely to hop back over the border for a variety of reasons including shopping, vacationing, and visiting loved ones.

But that excitement is also spreading south of the border, as many businesses in the U.S. rely on the people that travel from Canada.

This can include places for tourists like restaurants and hotels, places for people to shop like grocery stores and consumer electronic shops, and even some local events that are looking to show off their community.

Visit Minot's Executive Director Stephanie Schoenrock says she's heard a lot of excitement from the community in her city.

"There's no doubt that when we finally heard the news that the border was opening it was a very busy morning," said Schoenrock, "Talking with all kinds of restaurants and hotels and attractions and events, and a lot of the things to do down here."

"A lot of the new stuff, a bunch of the new businesses down here, they're not familiar with Canadian customers, they've reached out to ask 'How do we tell them about what to down here, and how do we notify them about some of the different things minot has to offer?'"

Schoenrock says that any Canadian visitors are likely to see a lot of differences since the local businesses have had to change a lot due to the shifting demands from customers over the pandemic.

"I don't know that it'll ever get back to the way it was, and I say that just because I believe that customer behavior has shifted so much. Business in general, can't stay the same otherwise you'll end up like Kodak, you've got to shift all the time," said Schoenrock, "Because consumers have shifted so dramatically, I do believe businesses will continue to respond if they're going to stay open."

Overall, Schoenrock says that while many people come down past the border for deals, her city has a lot going for it for Canadian travellers.

"The biggest reason we see people coming down is for shopping, of course, but often kind of also just to get out of town for the weekend," said Schoenrock, "You can come down and have a weekend away for a couple nights in a hotel, take in some restaurants, take in some new activities."

Schoenrock also said she personally hopes her brother-in-law and sister-in-law can come and visit sometime after the re-opening on November 8th.
