The land of living skies lived up to its name on Wednesday night, as the first major storm of 2017 made its way through Southeast Saskatchewan.

At around 9 p.m a tornado touched down near the Village of Alida, where reports of heavy rain, strong winds and baseball sized hail ripped through the area.

"In actual real data we were following it from early in the morning," explained Environment Canada's Warning Preparedness Meteorologist, Natalie Hasell as she spoke about tracking the storms potential. "It went across the Southern part of Saskatchewan relatively slowly, and we knew it was going to make its way to the Southeastern corner. In this case we had just the right profile, or perhaps just the wrong profile in order to put some rotation in the storms that developed."

"Everything that can come out of a severe thunderstorm did, including funnel clouds and a tornado. Large sized hail was also reported to be as big as baseballs in Alida," Hasell concluded.

Approximately 3.5 miles North of where Dianne Lemieux lives, the tornado that touched down managed to wreak havoc on one home.

"Her husband and my husband are first cousins," Lemieux said of the home owners who had their roof torn off during the tornado. "We saw pictures on Facebook shortly after and heard that there were no injuries."

"We saw the funnel cloud but when it came over our place it was laying on its side, thank god. It was scary, I just got a new phone and I wasn't sure how the camera worked so I didn't get any pictures of it, but I probably would have been shaking too much anyway."

As Environment Canada's Natalie Hasell previously stated, the storm produced everything that can come out of a thunderstorm. That was absolutely the case near Alida, as Lemieux talked about the different weather experienced in just a short distance from their home.

"Only six miles Northeast of here at my sisters house, her plants got totally shredded with golf ball sized hail and half an inch of rain in no time flat. We hardly got fifty drops of rain on the window at our place," she concluded.

With temperatures continuing into the mid to high 30’s through the weekend, there will be the possibility for more severe storms. Stay up to date with the latest by checking the forecast here on Discover Estevan.
