While you may look at it in the mail and think it's just another flyer to toss aside, you may want to take a closer look at the next thing you see from the War Amps in the mail. They're sending out their key tags, which have been a part of the War Amps since the aftermath of the Second World War.

The key tags make it possible for your keys to be returned to you in the event you lose them. When someone finds them, they can drop them into a mailbox, and then a courier will have them returned to you.

"When you get them in the mail, they have a nine-digit confidential number on it that's linked to your name and address," said Public Awareness Officer for the War Amps James Jordan. "Some common misconceptions is that you have to call to activate them or you have to send in a donation but that's not true at all. It's a free service we offer Canadians, but of course, donations are appreciated."

Since the start of the program, over 1.5 million sets of keys have been returned to Canadians with just over 70 years ago. Back at the end of the World Wars, veterans didn't have a lot of the same benefits that they get today, and so the War Amps created this service as a way to help raise funds to provide services to amputees from the war, offer something to the Canadian public, and even employ those same amputees after war in making these key tags.

"They started working in sheltered workshops making these key tags in the 1940s, but it was the largest at-your-honour service in Canada at the time and I do believe still is. So it was the veterans started the organization, they started the key tag service, and it's pretty much our bread and butter and how we raise most of the funds that we provide back to families in Canada."

The key tags should show up in your mailbox in the next week up until the end of June, but on the off-chance that you don't, you can visit the War Amps Website, or call them 1-800-250-3030, and they are all free of charge.
