The day that residents in Estevan have been waiting for has arrived.

After 5 weeks of construction and extensive detours, the work on the King Street rehabilitation project wrapped up, and the route was open as of Wednesday morning.

Along with the new asphalt and widened road comes some changes to the traffic flow, as City Safety Officer Helen Fornwald explained.

No parking zones are part of the changes on King Street.

"Please be aware that the new traffic pattern now has 4 lanes in this block. As well, there is no parking allowed on the north side of the 500 and 600 blocks  of King."

"Some site clean up and pedestrian fence work will continue. Watch for construction workers, and drive with caution," she added.

A new pedestrian railing is part of the upgrades.

Mayor Roy Ludwig noted that it took a lot of teamwork to get things done.

"In a job of this magnitude, everyone has to work very closely together. It was done to an absolutely great level."

"We are very happy that it has been opened up again. I'd like to thank Jeff Ward all of our managers and  employees for working so hard to make it happen," he expressed.

"I'd also like to thank the community, our citizens, for being patient and allowing the people to do their jobs. It's  much appreciated."

Ludwig also mentioned that there will be detours in place temporarily around King again in about a month, in order so crews can put a second layer of asphalt on the strip.

"So there will be a little bit more disruption, but of course nothing like rebuilding the roadway."

He stated they don't expect that to take any longer than a week.
