The name for Estevan Police Service's newest, and furriest, member has finally been chosen.

Named K9 Max, as he will 'maximize' public safety, he is a little over a year old. The moniker was chosen through a competition among the youngsters of the Energy City.

"I really like the name. The process was pretty interesting, how we used kids in the community to select it," said Constable Paul Chabot, the dog's handler, adding that the reasoning behind it was a "cool swing of things."

"I'm pretty happy with how things turned out."

The new member is only a couple of weeks into his training, and not only works with Chabot, but lives with him too. Chabot shared what that relationship looks like.

"He's become a member of our family. I have a wife and a small baby at home, so I'm sure that it's like anyone when they get a new dog. Not only that, I also go to work every day with him, so we definitely have a strong bond going."

He noted that he is looking forward to the future of the K9 unit.

"Just in the small amount of training that I have done so far, he can do some pretty amazing things, so I'm really looking forward to hitting the streets with him and seeing what we can do."
