Wednesday was a wonderful day to celebrate the women in Estevan who make significant contributions to the community. 

It was a packed house and attendees were treated to great food, great conversations and a great message.

This year's guest speaker was Sherry Knight. She is a Saskatchewan human resource specialist, a president and CEO, motivational speaker and was nominated for Woman of the Year on the Business Category. She spoke on the unstoppable nature of women and how to carry that determination through. 

There were 14 nominees in four categories for 2017:

Cathedral Insurance Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Workplace:

Nominees: Wendy Courteau & Joyce Mack

Award Winner: Joyce Mack

Joyce Mack has put in countless hours with Skills Canada training and travelling with the students. She was actively involved in the creation of a new cosmetology and practical applied arts curriculum. She also volunteers at the Estevan Motor Speedway. 

"For me, this is recognizing, from the parents and the students, all their success and that together and with time everyone will have a future and be successful. I like watching the students grow. Slow down? I don't know what that is. I like to be busy."

Ida Petterson Memorial Award for Outstanding Entrepreneur:

Nominees: Fay Harris & Robin Dowhanuik

Award Winner: Robin Dowhanuik

Robin Dowhaniuk competes and volunteers with the rodeo. She has had her own business for five years and has many loyal clients. She provides great leadership to her staff and encourages all the businesses around town. 

"I'm honoured. Just to know that people cared enough to nominate me. I have great staff, I like helping people and I'm trying to be successful for my kids."

Shirley Orsted Memorial Award for the Young Women of Today:

Nominees: Tia Dayman, Avery Dechief, Kalee Donovan, Amber Hammermeister, Kourtney Kobitz, Mataya Michel, Jordan Walter & Sarah Wright

Award Winner: Tia Dayman

Tia Dayman has spent many hours working on a human rights handbook which will soon be published. She is also involved in the Junior Quota Club, Social Justice Club and is the co-editor at the ECS Yearbook. 

"It is such a surprise and an honour. All of the nominees are some of my closest friends and I have such respect for everybody. It feels really, really nice."

SaskTel Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award:

Nominees: Christa Morhart & Jessie Smoliak

Award Winner: Christa Morhart

Chirsta Morhart is a busy mother of three and works full time but still finds time to volunteer with Girl Guides, United Way and the St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation.

"It's nice to be recognized but that's not why I do it. I see women getting more and more involved as business owners, entrepreneurs. I see them more and more involved when it comes to different boards. They're stepping up to president roles."
