Take a walk outside right now and feel the heaviness of the air, and you might think to yourself that a storm must be close. Environment Canada would certainly seem to think so, as they've issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the southeast.

The watch has been issued for Estevan, Weyburn, Radville, and Milestone. It includes the R.M. of Benson including Benson, the R.M. of Cambria including Torquay and Outram, the R.M. of Cymri including Midale Macoun and Halbrite, Hitchcock, the R.M. of Scott including Yellowgrass Lang and Lewvan, and the R.M. of Souris Valley including Tribune and Oungre.

In what has been a dry season so far, there haven't been even many watches for severe thunderstorms. According to Environment Canada, however, conditions are just right for " severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain."

"A trough of low pressure tracking across central Saskatchewan is expected to trigger scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and evening," reads a notice from Environment Canada. "Some of these thunderstorms could be severe."

A severe thunderstorm watch is not as severe as a thunderstorm warning, which occurs when a thunderstorm is almost certainly imminent. However, Environment Canada's regional forecast has been predicting a 60 percent chance of rain on this afternoon for at least the past three days.

"Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall," the release said.
