The annual Fall Clean Sweep is scheduled for this weekend, with city crews assisting Estevan residents in cleaning up their yards.

The sweep begins Friday morning at 8 a.m. and runs until Sunday at 4 p.m.

"We're offering a free landfill for the citizens of Estevan to take their yard waste and debris," said Roads and Drainage Manager Norm Mack. "And after these few days of winds, there could be a lot of leaves cornered up."

He said at this time of year, yard waste can mean a variety of things.

"A lot of flowers are pulled...anything that's laying in your alley perhaps. Anything that's from your house, home, or garden, we'll take," Mack said, adding that the city will not be accepting hazardous or commercial waste.

Mack said the initiative helps to keep the city clean.

"We have the pick up in the spring and then the free landfill in the fall...it cleans up our city and brings awareness to the folks in the neighbourhood that this weekend 'let's clean up our yard,'" Mack said. "Hopefully this weekend the weather is a little better than what it's been the last couple days. It's just awareness to keep our city clean, and we can all use a tidier city."

The landfill is located southeast of Estevan out towards Sawyer Road. Mack said there would be signs up to direct people once they're in the area.

It'll be open Friday from 8-5, Saturday from 10-4, and Sunday from 10-4.

"When you go out to the landfill, make sure that you have your identification of some kind to prove that you're a citizen of Estevan," Mack said.
