The Estevan Police Service is warning against a number of reports of phone scams in the area. Scammers posing from various places such as Stars Lottery, Canada Revenue Agency and businesses have been contacting residents in hopes of convincing them to send money.

"Scams are on the increase across the country and of course they are affecting us in this community." explained Deputy Chief Murray Cowan. "These scammers tend to target the vulnerable, or the elderly."

"The big message that we want to get out there to people is when you're receiving these phone calls, not to give any information out over the phone. It's a big problem."

He adds that the old adage rings true: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

"We can't empathize it enough, people still fall victim to these scams and it's concerning to us here at this office and we want to ensure that people will hang the phone up. You can certainly report it to us but don't give that information out over the phone."

He advises people that if they have doubts, to call the Estevan Police Service.

"Even if it's something that you're concerned about or have a question about, we still suggest, hang the phone up. You can contact our office, explain the situation to us and a lot of times our members will be able to confirm that it is in fact a scam."

He also mentioned that Starts Lottery, financial institutions and the Canada Revenue Agency do not ask for personal information over the phone.

"They don't contact people over the phone and that's the message that we need to get out there."

"Some people have their life savings and retirement savings depleted because of these scams. It is quite disturbing."
