When Tanner Jeannot came to his first training camp with the Moose Jaw Warriors, he was an unknown list player, but he impressed enough to eventually receive a spot on the team.

This week, the 19-year-old forward heads off to his first NHL training camp with the Minnesota Wild and Jeannot will no doubt be leaning on that experience.

“It’s a little bit the same, I’ve just got to go into camp, play my game and try to show what I can do,” said Jeannot after practice with the Warriors this week. “I can’t try to be a player that I’m not, I’m just going to do what I can out there and hopefully have a good showing.”

Jeannot will be with the Wild this weekend as they take part in the 2016 NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, Michigan.

“I’m really excited, it’s going to be my first experience with something like this, so I just want to go there, have a good showing, play hard, play my game and just have a good camp,” he said.

“It will be good to see where I stand against some of those higher level players, everyone has earned their way there and I’ll have to prove myself, just like they will.”

Over the past two seasons, Jeannot has no doubt shown that there’s a lot of layers to his game as he was one of the Warriors’ best two-way forwards last season, playing against the opposition’s top units and chipping in on the offensive end, finishing with 17 goals and 33 points, which blew his 2014-15 totals of one goal and five points out of the water.

Jeannot put all of his skills on display during the Warriors’ playoff run to the second round. He finished with six goals and 15 points in 10 games and helped shut down the Prince Albert Raiders’ top line in the first round.

That season helped raise the level of confidence in his game that Jeannot has.

“My first year, my confidence wasn’t as high as it is now,” he said. “Now that I know where I stand against all these other players and know that I belong in this league, it definitely helps out, I’m a lot more confident with the puck and trying to make plays.”

This offseason, Jeannot went to work on his game to help take it to another level for his third season in the Western Hockey League.

“I was in the gym everyday working on my strength and size, and also my edge work, I’ve been trying to get that better, get my turns tighter and my feet going a little bit quicker. There’s always things that you can improve on,” said Jeannot.

The Oxbow, Saskatchewan product also worked on his shot in a hopes of providing more offence this season for the Tribe.

“Watching Dryden Hunt all of last season, you see how important a good shot is, he scored 58 goals with that cannon of his, so of course that was a focus that I had going into the offseason and continuing on into this season,” said Jeannot.

Jeannot and the Wild will hit the ice on Friday afternoon against the Dallas Stars at 1:30 p.m. in Traverse City. They square off with Carolina on Saturday night and then finish the round robin against the New York Rangers on Monday afternoon.

The placing games for the tournament are on Tuesday.

The Warriors will be without six key players over the next couple weeks as Jeannot, Brett Howden, Noah Gregor, Zach Sawchenko, Brody Willms and Dmitri Zaitsev all attend NHL camps.

Moose Jaw finishes the preseason this week with two games, they face the Raiders in Prince Albert on Thursday and then host the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday night at Mosaic Place.
